Africa University
Mutare, Zimbabwe
Africa University is a Methodist University, as is Linfield College in McMinneville, Oregon, and many other rural schools globally.

Peggy Bradley setting up hydroponic research greenhouse, 1996.

A 10 foot by 10 foot research greenhouse was donated by Carbon Quest to Africa University in Mutare Zimbabwe.  Africa University enrolls over 400 students from 14 African nations.  Agriculture is just one primary focus of the University and the hydroponic greenhouse supports research in plant nutrients and hydroponic culture.

The research greenhouse is made of several different small tub units and NFT tube growers, and uses available solar energy to run two small pumps.  The flexible nature of the greenhouse allows for several students and professors to conduct experiments at a bench.  Organic and inorganic nutrients are tested on a variety of crops.

Some of the students are using hydroponic culture as a component of their senior projects.  Testing a variety of flower and edible crops, including tea and coffee, introduces hydroponic culture as an alternative agricultural method in arid African nations.
