Experiment No. 1 was conducted in tub growers in the research greenhouse. Four tubs each of corn and beans were grown for 60 days to maturity for determining yields for both edible food (grams in wet weight) and plant materials (grams in dry weight).
| Four tubs of Native American corn were planted and thinned to six plants per tub. The mature corn was harvested at the end of a 60 day cycle. The corn plants were seperated into edible food parts by cutting and scraping the corn kernels from the cob to obtain their wet weight in grams. Plant materials were seperated, dried and weighed in grams.
Anasasi vine green beans were planted in four tub growers, 6 plants in each tub, and were supported by string trellaces. The beans matured and harvesting began in the fifth week and continued for three weeks producing similar numbers. The harvested fresh green beens were weighed (wet weight) after picking each day. After 60 days, the bean plant material was collected, dried and weighed in grams.
