Disaster in Northest Brazil

Cajuas, Brazil is a village of 153 families and 245 children. The village in 2001 was at the point of starvation, suffering from a several year drought.

Crops had failed several years in a row. The children were fed fed hot water to end hunger pains.

Corn does not grow without water.

A farmer has to take water from the water pit in town to the crops. It does little good in the partched earth.

The family meal was very sparse. Many people shared a very small amount of corn.

The children showed signs of malnourishment. They needed immediate help.

The Institute sent supplies to this village and helped to drill a well in the village which ended the water problem for these peole and two other villages nearby. Update on Brazil
