9. Starting Seeds.

Seeds usually need special conditions to begin life as a plant. This experiment uses hydroponics to grow plants from seeds.

Equipment required:

  • Two empty glass jars
  • Paper towels
  • Water
  • "Grow" Hydroponic Nutrient, Calcium Nitrate, Magnesium Sulfate
  • Dry bean seeds

Directions

1.Fill each jar with one or two paper towels.

2. Place a few beans in each jar, near the glass edge.

3. Add about a cup of water to each jar. One is plain water and the other is hydroponic nutrient water.

4. Cover each jar with aluminum foil (to reduce light) or place in a dark space.

Observe:

Once a day take the jars out of their dark place or uncover.

Draw pictures in your lab notebook of what happens.

Did the beans in hydroponic water grow any faster than the plain water beans?
